This paper looks at trends in how Passive Optical Network (PON) networks are being deployed, for example, in terms of technology choice (e.g., Gigabit Passive Optical Network [GPON], combo PON, or standalone XGS-PON) and the value of remote optical line terminal (OLT) deployments and pluggable OLTs. It analyzes some of the issues, such as CAPEX and OPEX costs and energy consumption, that operators must consider when deploying PON networks.
