Middle-mile fiber optic networks are crucial to delivering broadband connectivity and digital inclusion to rural communities. These regional or statewide networks link internet backbones to last-mile Internet Service Providers (ISPs). They are so critical that the U.S. government has made $1 billion available to states to fund middle-mile projects—and many experts say even more investment is needed.
