Micrologic, a privately owned and operated internet service provider (ISP) in West Virginia, is deploying a new fiber broadband network in Randolph County using Ciena’s broadband solution.

Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian region, West Virginia is renowned for its remarkable landscapes characterized by dense forests and rugged mountains. However, these natural wonders present unique challenges when it comes to broadband connectivity. The complex topography and remote locations make it costly to deploy fiber-optic infrastructure, contributing to West Virginia being ranked as one of the least connected states in the U.S. But a significant transformation is underway. The Mountain State is making historic investments in new broadband infrastructure to expand coverage and capacity, aiming to narrow the connectivity gap in underserved and unserved regions.

With the support of grant funds from the West Virginia Broadband Investment Plan (WVBIP) and Citizens Bank of West Virginia, Micrologic is actively participating in this initiative. The ISP is deploying an advanced broadband network that will deliver high-speed, reliable broadband to nearly 4,000 unserved locations upon completion, representing a meaningful improvement in connectivity for West Virginians.

For its new broadband network, Micrologic is leveraging Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform to bring high-capacity connectivity into West Virginia from major internet exchanges and key components of Ciena’s XGS-PON solution, including 5164 routersXGS-PON micro-OLTs (optical line terminals), and 3801 ONUs (optical network units), to provide broadband access to residences.

Micrologic will turn up the network beginning in August 2024, with full completion expected in 2025.
