The Data Edge Manager—a component of Ciena’s ON-Center Network and Service Management Suite—offers a rich set of features and interfaces
to roll out emerging Ethernet- and Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS)-based services and streamline the extension of incumbent services such as Frame Relay, TDM and ATM.
With standard and open interfaces, the Data Edge Manager integrates seamlessly with incumbent Operations Support Systems (OSSs), protecting network operators’ substantial investments in network management systems and staff training. The Data Edge Manager integrates directly with installed backend systems to streamline new service deployments, reduce development costs and minimize the need to retrain staff or hire additional staff resources. The software also allows service providers to deploy DN 7000 Series switches without disrupting operations or retraining employees to provision and manage yet another platform.
The Data Edge Manager enables service providers to evolve their networks at a pace that matches their business plans and capital budgets without disrupting network services or operational practices. Service providers can add DN 7000 Series switches or the CN 5060 to future proof their networks for MPLS- and Ethernet-based service deployment and extend existing Circuit-Emulation Service (CES), Ethernet to Frame Relay and ATM interworking services with better margins than existing solutions. The same Data Edge Manager platform provisions and manages all these environments, allowing network transitions to take place with minimal disruption.
Benefits
Rapid time-to-market: Because of the Data Edge Manager’s inherent interoperability with existing systems and practices, service providers can introduce Ciena’s Carrier Ethernet solutions quickly to scale existing CES, SAToP, CESoPSN, Frame Relay and ATM services or deploy new Ethernet- and MPLS-based services such as Layer 2 MPLS VPNs based on Pseudowire Emulation Edge-to-Edge (PWE3).
Reduced development and operations costs: The development and provisioning costs associated with deploying new revenue-generating services are reduced sharply because service providers can reuse existing interfaces and leverage staff expertise.
Extensible: Designed to accommodate networks that evolve in size and complexity, the Data Edge Manager’s distributed architecture scales as the network grows. The software manages existing CES, Frame Relay and ATM services and provides an evolutionary path to emerging technologies such as MPLS and pseudowire aggregation and switching.
Highly reliable: A foundation built on proven, industry standard technologies—such as Oracle database and the availability of redundant management servers—empowering service providers to provision, manage and troubleshoot data services with the same degree of reliability their customers have come to expect in telephony environments.
Reduced mangement complexity: Auto-discovery/synchronization and domain-based management with navigational trees streamline the tasks and time associated with managing DN 7000 Series and CN 5060 network elements, reducing operations expenses and enabling service providers to deliver higher network service levels.
